BY MICHAEL AND MICHELLE HANSON

Our first trip to Wewak with Samaritan Aviation was in January 2025. Mark had invited us in the fall of 2024 to help support the project, with Michael stepping into a role managing the new Kreer Heights base expansion and Melissa serving the team through much-appreciated chiropractic care.
What we discovered upon arrival was more than we could have imagined. The incredibly hard-working team welcomed us with such gratitude and warmth that any travel fatigue quickly disappeared. Melissa’s chiropractic care opened doors for meaningful conversations, encouraging us in our work in Wewak and, we hope, encouraging the team as they continue their Gospel ministry.
Papua New Guinea is a very “dynamic” environment. We had heard the stories, and they proved true. The base expansion project faced numerous logistical challenges and moved slowly while we were there last year. Even so, meaningful progress was made. Before we left, we were able to help move the project forward by approving final drawings for the homes, building placements, septic systems, and foundation work.
We had planned to return in September, but the Lord’s providence, through a shoulder injury and financial considerations, kept us stateside until this January, almost exactly one year after our first visit. During that time, Samaritan Aviation hired a contractor experienced in building this type of home. Now, back on site, we are seeing nearly three houses completed, with a targeted move-in date of March. Julius has proven invaluable, making extraordinary progress along the way.
Because of Julius’s excellent work, I (Michael speaking) have been reassigned from home construction to addressing some complex hillside retention projects. I’m also working with the manufacturer of our “kit” homes and buildings to approve drawings and layouts for the on-site community center and office building. If time allows, I will also assist with much-needed upgrades and remodeling plans for the aircraft hangar at the nearby Wewak airport.
All that to say, the Hansons are living their “best lives” back here in Wewak alongside the team. Melissa and I feel extraordinarily blessed to have the opportunity to serve this region and nation in this way—bringing the hope and love of Jesus to this incredible community.
