A single drum of fuel costs $650 on average and allows us to fly approximately 5 lifesaving flights – averaging just $130 per flight – for mothers in labor, children fighting infection, and families with nowhere else to turn. When Delma Genji, a 36-year-old mother from the remote village of Timboli, experienced a ruptured membrane late in her pregnancy, there was no time to waste. Complications like this can quickly become life-threatening for both mother and baby—especially in places where reaching a hospital by foot or canoe can take days.
Because Samaritan Aviation had fuel in the tanks and a plane ready to fly, Delma was transported quickly to the hospital. She was taken straight to the labor ward, where she safely delivered a baby boy. Today, Delma has been discharged and is recovering well, while her newborn continues to receive care in the nursery.
